This is a post I wrote for my friend Faith at Nourishing Herbalist, where I give the recipe for my hormone balancing tonic, a tonic that did wonders for my health. Keep reading for an excerpt.
Some time ago my health was not in an optimal state. My body had taken a toll.
I had given birth, I was nursing, and sleeping no more than 2 hours at a time.
If you are are a mom you know exactly how much pregnancy and breastfeeding effects a woman’s body. I knew there was more going on than new-mother exhaustion. I was always cold, moody, had absolutely no energy, was 15 pounds under my normal pre-pregnancy weight, and my skin was very dry.
After two fruitless trip to my physician I decided to do a little research on my own.
Turns out, I had a stressed metabolism.
Your metabolism does more than “burn calories”, it regulates vital organ behavior such as liver, digestive, and thyroid functions.
The stress hormones further play a role in the balance of your sex hormones: estrogen and progesterone. When there is an imbalance of sex hormones it effects the ways your body utilizes your thyroid hormones! Once things get going, it’s a chain reaction!
Well, needless to say, I had to get to work and balance my hormones, naturally.
