I have a little confession.
Most days I worry that I am not enriching my child’s world. You’ll see, I stay home with him during the day and some night I attend school, but I also run my business (this blog) from home; so technically I am a stay-at-home-mom and a work-from-home-mom. Being home means I should be supermom coming up with lots of activities to widen and enrich my son’s life, right?. There is a problem with that: I don’t know how.
Sure, Pinterest has been a great source of ideas (and at times it just makes me feel more guilty!) but I am particularly interested in activities that will appeal to children’s natural curiosity, and also I want eco-friendly materials that I would feel comfortable using around him while teaching him about nature and being how to be a good steward of our planet. Tall order, isn’t it?
Enter Green Kid Crafts
Green Kid Crafts is a subscription based program. Each month you receive a box with 3 to 4 Eco-Friendly activities suitable for children ages 3 to 10. Here are just some of the facts that stood up for me:
- These activities are all STEM activities (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), aligned to national standards
- Each monthly Discovery Boxes are developed by teachers, crafty moms, and STEM experts to support key developmental skills
- Each month brings a new theme; past themes have included Mad Scientist, Nocturnal Animals, Around the World, Outer Space, and Feathered Friends
- Green Kid Crafts is a mom-owned, green company founded by Penny Bauder, a mom of two and an environmental activist from Alaska
- Green Kid Crafts is certified carbon neutral (through CarbonFund.org), Green America Approved, a member of 1% for the Planet, and has won numerous awards and designations for its responsible business practices
I loved how each box comes with about 3 or 4 ready-to-make activities. As a busy mom I really appreciate that each activity comes with all the materials needed and an instruction card for each.
With your monthly subscription you also receive a free copy of Green Kid! Activities Guide (a $5.95 value) for free every month. This is an online guide full of additional content, games, parent resources (I need that!), book recommendation, and more cool stuff.
Green Kid Crafts has received many accolades and awards, here are just a couple:
- Green America People and Planet Award
- MACT Excellence Award
- Parent’s Choice Recommended
Above all the awards and accolades Green Kid Crafts has received, what was most important to me was the quality of the activities and the time spent with my son. I loved knowing these activities are suitable for his age and for his developmental needs. I loved knowing that all the materials used are nontoxic for him and the planet, and we were able to recycle or reuse some of the left over materials like the card instructions or the corn-based cups.
I loved having this time with my child, doing something special with him and for him; not just any activity, but a meaningful and enriching one for him. Just look at his face below. Awakening that sense of wonder, curiosity, and marveling about learning is just priceless to this mama!
Monthly subscriptions are $19.95/ month and you can subscribe to a 3, 6, or 12 month plan, Sibling subscription packages and digital subscriptions are also available, and you can also purchase any plan as a gift.
